Lovely responses my essay ‘Sixteen’ on RTÉ Radio 1 last night – a rare occasion where I read something myself. Covering education, the Troubles, escaping into the arts, the arts and class, sexuality and returning home.

The essay is from the anthology ‘Impermanence’ commissioned by ⁦⁦Centre Culturel Irlandais, and edited by Nora Hickey M’Sichili & Neil Hegarty published by No Alibis Press. Recordings beautifully produced by Cliodhna Ni Anluain.

Big Man opens October 27 at Lyric Theatre

It sounds like all is going brilliantly in rehearsals and these pics are gorgeous. Thanks to Jimmy Fay and Lyric Theatre Belfast, the director Patrick J O Reilly and designer Tracey Lindsay. And especially actor Tony Flynn. I’ll see it at the dress run on Wednesday night (gulp!) Tickets here.

Prizes for Belfast Youth

I created a lockdown writing competition with Ardoyne Youth Enterprise. There were three categories based on age with the theme Children of Lockdown. The prizes were awarded this week and I went to the offices to sign books and certificates. You can read the winning entires here.

This was a follow on from the videos I made of The Good Son for AYE during the first lockdown.

Visiting Ardoyne Library

I’ll be returning to Ardoyne Library during Book Week NI. This library was where I would hide from the streets of Ardoyne – the bullies and The Troubles. It’s where I indulged my love for books, as we had none in our house, and I don’t know what I would have done without it! Come along if you can.

German TV for ‘Wee Muckers’

I’ve written the introduction to Toby Binder’s wonderful photo book ‘Wee Muckers’ which is launched in Munich tonight! The book is a series of photographs of working class youths in Belfast.

German TV, Das Erste 1, flew over to do an interview with me and I took them around Ardoyne, where I grew up and where The Good Son is set.
